Élysée Table

In 1972, Pierre Paulin was commissioned by the Pompidou presidential couple to redesign their private apartments at the Élysée Palace, including the dining room and smoking lounge, creating iconic and timeless interiors.

Designed specifically for the dining room, the tables pay tribute to Alvar Aalto. Paulin reinterprets Aalto’s fluted palmette legs by transforming them into a central convex base molded in cast aluminum. This geometric inversion results in a sculptural and stable foundation that visually lightens the piece while maintaining structural solidity. Innovating further with finishes, Paulin uses a matte, textured coating originally developed by NASA to reduce glare and optical interference, reinforcing the design’s firmly contemporary and experimental vocabulary for its time.
